On this page you can follow a step by step guide, to how a painting is created.

Step 1: I start by making a rough sketch on paper, which allows me an idea of the size and pose, I will do the painting. I then transfer this to the pastel paper.

Step 2:The next step is to block in a mid tone range, of the colours. At this stage the picture looks very flat and lifeless. Now I start the interesting part, doing the details, I usually start with the eyes or ears, as then the painting comes alive.

Step 3: I will now work on the background, if there is one, whilst carrying on with more of the details and adding shading and highlights. The painting is built up of layers, giving depth and allowing me to mix different colours, to achieve the desired colour.

Step 4: Et voilà ! after some final tweeks the painting is finished.
